According to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 it is mandatory for every two wheeler running on the Indian roads to have a valid two wheeler insurance policy. If you are found to be driving without an insurance policy by the traffic police or motor department officials, you will be fined Rs.2,000/- under the new Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill 2016. Hence, if you have lost or misplaced your insurance related documents, follow these steps with immediate effect:
- File an FIR with the police department in your area.
- Send an attested copy of the FIR to your insurance company.
- Apply for a duplicate copy of the insurance policy.
- Publish an advertisement in the local newspaper if required.
- Sign an indemnity bond to indemnify your insurer.

Steps to apply for a duplicate two-wheeler Insurance:
A two-wheeler insurance policy contains all the insurance information pertaining to the insured vehicle. This is the main document that you have to produce at the time of filing a claim for any loss or damages caused to your vehicle due to an accident or other calamities. If you don’t have your policy papers in hand, you wouldn’t be able to file a claim with your insurance provider. Hence, if you can’t find the policy documents the best solution is to apply for a duplicate insurance policy:
Follow these steps to apply for a copy of your insurance policy documents at the earliest:
File an FIR:
At first, you will have to file a First Information Report (FIR) at the nearest police about the loss of the documents. Visit the concerned police station in your area and report the loss of your two-wheeler insurance papers. Clearly mention your policy number, type of policy (third-party liability policy or comprehensive policy, and the add-ons or riders, if there is any.
When you are done reporting, submit an application to get a FIR copy from the police station. Get the copy attested and submit it to your insurance company as a proof that the documents are missing and you have reported the loss. Ensure to attach the FIR application with the FIR copy at the time of submitting the documents to your insurer.

Next, you need to apply for a copy of your two wheeler insurance policy. Submit a written application to your insurance company, declaring that you want to apply for a duplicate two wheeler insurance policy and state the reason for the same. Mention all the details pertaining to your policy in the application including the policyholder’s name, policy number, date of issuance, and type of the policy cover. You should also state the circumstances under which you have lost the insurance policy papers.
If your insurance policy is held jointly, you will have to sign and submit the application along with the other holder of the policy. You will also be required to submit the FIR copy along with your application to get a copy of your two-wheeler insurance papers.

Call the insurance agent:
In case you have applied for your two-wheeler insurance through an insurance agent, call the person and inform about the loss. The insurance agent might have a copy of your insurance papers. If he/she has the paper, ask to send a PDF copy in your mail.
Contact the customer care centre:
If your insurance company has an email support system, write to the customer support email ID about the loss. Mention your registered mobile number and mail ID. If the company policy of your insurer allows, your insurance policy details will be shared through mail.
Download a copy:
Check whether your insurance company offers bike insurance online policy renewal or download facility. If it does login to your account and download the policy papers online.
